“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”
— Hebrews 12:1
Tonight, my ears are still ringing with the laughter of all who came to the Fall Festival to enjoy a night of dress up, a night to compete with others and paint faces, and a night to enjoy friendship with joy and candy. It was time to simplify life, to enjoy each other, and to embrace creativity. It is also a time to remember to appreciate each moment.
This coming Sunday, we will celebrate All Saints’ Sunday at church. This holy day was a day that John Wesley called “a festival I truly love” in his journal entry on November 1, 1767. As Protestants, we do not understand saints as the Catholic church does. Saints for us are those who have touched our lives personally, but who now rest in heaven. They were and are the people in our lives who have shaped our faith. The souls who taught us how to love as Christ loved, and the ones who remain in our hearts even though they are no longer living. In Hebrews 12, Christians are asked to remember that a “great cloud of witnesses” surrounds us, encourages us, and is celebrating with us.
This Sunday, I encourage you to remember the saints who await you in the great cloud of witnesses by bringing a photo or a memento of your loved ones. These items will decorate the sanctuary as photos are displayed on the screen (please read the inside of the Circuit Rider to find the email address to send photos of your saints!).
God is with you now and always. May your week be gentle. May your heart be at peace. May you continue to grow in your relationship with God as you remember with rejoicing in your heart all those who have shaped you, loved you, and who love you still.
Blessings,
Pastor Amber
