Micah 6:8
“What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”
I am so thankful for the ways that Jesus selected the disciples. From Simon Peter to Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James (son of Alphaeus), Thaddeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, these men left their lives to “’Come, follow me [Jesus].’”(Matthew 4:19) None of them were kings – they were fishermen, tax collectors, common men who chose to leave their ordinary lives to participate in something extraordinary. Their lives were then transformed when they humbled themselves before God. They were no longer just ordinary men; they were disciples of Christ.
The disciples’ call still applies to us in our current time. Our society places value on individual success. We hear applaud people for their independence, strength, and courage to thrive financially, emotionally, and socially. I have witnessed the destructive nature of hyper independence. But we were created to be more than just an island. We need God and each other. Jesus is still calling us simple, everyday people to “Come, follow me.” But do we listen, or do we turn up the music louder and think that we have it all figured out on our own?
God can transform each of us into kings and queens through our faith. The labels and the weights of the world do not define us, but our love and life in Christ can open our hearts to the power of the Holy Spirit that is calling each of us to “Come, follow me.” Would you drop your fishing nets and go where you are called? Would you be strong enough to humble your heart before God? Where is God calling your today to become more loving, compassionate, and giving?
May the Lord bless your life now and always. Listen for God’s voice calling your heart into rest, peace, healing, hope and joy.
May you be blessed,
Pastor Amber
